Barrington, Rhode Island Real Estate and Homes for Sale

Barrington was originally incorporated under the name of Swansea as part of the original Plymouth Colony.  In 1717, Barrington was pared off as a separate town, as part of the state of Massachusetts interestingly enough.  In 1746, it was made part of Rhode Island, along with Bristol, Tiverton, Little Compton and Cumberland.  In 1747, the name was changed to Warren in honor of Sir Peter Warren of the British Navy.  Barrington was taken from Warren and incorporated June 16, 1770.  So to say Barrington has a rich history is quite an understatement!

In the early days, Barrington was primarily a farming community, and in the 19th century became popular as a summer resort getaway.   Barrington is home to several large manufacturing businesses, however.  Most notably in the late 1800s to early 1900s the Barrington Brick Works made bricks that were used in construction all over the world.  Now it is best known as a place of beautiful homes and country estates.  Nayatt Point,  the southwestern part of the town, is home to a beautiful summer colony on the shores of Narragansett Bay.  Barrington's public schools, like East Greenwich's, are annually ranked at the top of Rhode Island's systems.  Barrington also has a bustling town center with every shopping flavor imaginable from boutique like mom-and-pop stores to the best retail has to offer.

The pride of Barrington may very well be the Rhode Island Country Club, a stellar PGA golf course rated among the best in the east.  The ocean views from this course rival that of Pebble Beach, CA.
